Keely Perkins- Artist
Growing up in Eastern Montana I always painted and drew. I was not interested in the vast prairies and sky, but the animals and birds that housed them. Only after moving away to college did I fully and truly appreciate the unique environment of Montana and the critters who call it home.
After college I moved back to my hometown of Miles City, Montana. To pass the cold Montana Falls, Winters (and sometimes the Springs), I took pottery classes from the local Art center. I continued to paint and draw. Soon I found a way to combine my love of mark making, through painting and the love of making something functional, through pottery.
I use a watercolor style of painting, layering lights to darks, all the while keeping in mind the glazes I use are transparent and the thickness to which the glaze is applied will affect the color and over all feel of a piece. I am a sucker for color. I use bright colors and strong lines to create a strong contrast between the main subject and the background.
I started painting birds, and frogs and antelope and bears and many other Fauna and Flora found in Montana. I love that my painting and drawing can be handled and cared for by their owners. They can be used in everyday life to drink and eat out of, to bake tonight’s sides or casserole in. This function gives each piece its own purpose, a reason to be something other than just beautiful.
